It's curious that I've never had this problem to the extent that I've reworked a long section over and over. I do think that it stems back to the fact that I mistakenly thought I knew the motivations and desires of my characters and so every fix that I made was based on those wrong assumptions, and never really solved the problem. It turned out in the end that I missed a large part of what made up several of my main characters. I still put it down to the book being a romance, and that my head was still more in plotting and character survival and growth rather than the romantic story arc and their emotional plot line. Big aha moment for me.

Thanks for letting me know about Feedly. I got it too. Not sure why it was delayed.

I'm an outliner, but that doesn't mean I really get my characters when I start out. Lately I figure the character out after so much writing (usually 1/4 to 1/3) and then it's an "ah-ha" moment. Of course, that means I need to go back to the beginning and fix what I have to continue on with the story. After reading Hawker's Take Off Your Pants, I am going to have more purpose with my characters at the beginning to hopefully avoid the figuring them out while writing stage. We'll see how it goes. Heh.

Perhaps I've been ultra-sensitive while writing this book because I'm so concious that romance is a stretch for me. Though I must admit, I enjoy it when the scenes work out, though the reader will be the judge of that as always.

I just experienced this with my recent contemporary romance – the one I've whined to you about way too many times. hehe But after all the hair pulling and frustration, like you, I know I've come out on the other end as a better writer. I learned so much about myself as an author and about my characters. Well done on pushing through it. It's a huge achievement:)

Basically the rough draft is where I give my characters free reign so that they can act and react as they will. Rewrites are when I tidy everything up. 😉

Still there, still doing that. It's a dance between plotting and pacing, motivation and emotions. If it weren't for my writing group it would take so much longer to discover the problems.

Sorry to hear that you are having such problems with your witch. 🙂 Reassuring though to know I'm not the only one that goes through this. I doubted I was, but sharing helps. (Which is why I made this post in case others were going through the same thing.) Hopefully you'll sort her out one day?

This one might be your best yet! I have one story about a sexy witch, a character that's been with me for years, that I haven't managed to get right yet. I wrote a trilogy for her, but it wasn't right. I've tried rewriting it several times, and still, I don't have it. One day, I'll find that right way to get her story out, but for now, she just has to wait her turn! 🙂
