You should do my other half’s commute to work, and that’s in the UK. Middle lane hoggers are common. So annyoing and dangerous.

I think you might be right, Angela. In reality, it probably is more of a crazy extension of personal rights, rather than a need to be selfish, but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t recognize when they are holding up traffic and get out of the way.

I also expect it is the result of driver education that often teaches a driver to “pick the lane most suitable to the length of your journey”. That’s utter rot. If you’re driving 300 miles to Vegas, I don’t want you sitting in the fast lane doing 55. Better advice is “pick the lane most suitable to your velocity relative to traffic around you.”

But that’s just me.

Having driven the 15 and the 5 in San Diego, I can understand what you’re talking about. As for a pet peeve, I can’t comprehend how drivers can jump into a left lane only to go slower than the person they were behind. It really makes no sense to me.

And as a proud American, what’s at play here is a perception issue. What you describe as selfish behavior (which is difficult to call it otherwise given the choice to simply obey the signs on the roads) is viewed as individual right – the right to roll in any lane at whatever slow speed they choose -_- In the south, being nice on the roads is part of Southern Hospitality.
