I think in the five years since it’s exploded, it’s become an extremely viable option–a way to build your platform for REAL with what authors do–we write books. Thoughtful post, Graeme. Now I just need to buy a real Kindle! My laptop Kindle hurts my eyes!

Good comments, Dave. And perhaps that is one of the inherent problems with paper book bookstores that they cannot carry copies of millions of books. This is of course where digital media wins. Yes, there are consequences to evolution, but if the change is more beneficial than not, it will prevail, and humans do control that evolution: We can either buy ebooks or self-pubbed authors, or not. We do determine our own fate.

And thanks for your kind comments about Ocean of Dust 🙂

I think its worth exploring that metaphor though. Evolution also causes extinctions. What are we prepared to sacrifice for the sake of the brave new world of free market self publishing? When I visit a bookshop, the shelves are already crowded with hundreds of authors and that is after the filtering effect of agents and publishers. The bookshop model may not survive the kinds of upheaval that the loss of any filtering would cause. How would a bookshop choose what to stock? I’m not putting my voting slip in either box here, just making the point that change has consequences and its a good idea to be analytical about those consequences before ploughing ahead. You are a very good writer and Ocean of Dust is a damn good read. If I could be sure of similar quality in all self-publishing, I’d be much less concerned.

Shake a fist at it rather than embrace it. The smart venturers are already looking at ways to capitalize, looking for more ways to add to the change. The old guard will continue to do what it does best, rumble and thunder, make noise and tsk, tsk, tsk. Change will continue as well. And that’s not always a bad thing.
